Na me be Kevin, the solo developer behind MemoCoach. I first base the app on technique wey my primary school teacher use to help students memorise poems very fast (for my small school in Belgium 🇧🇪).

How to import your texts

Okay, time to learn! You fit study your own texts or start to test the app with Robert Frost poem The road not taken.

To add your own texts, tap + Add text button for Library page. Remember say you fit copy & paste texts from anywhere (Safari, Notes, etc.). You still fit import PDF, TXT, RTF or HTML files.

How to start memorizing

Once your text don ready, na so I recommend make you study am:

• Tap your text and choose the first learning method:

• Read the entire text aloud some times to get used to am. Make you know say plenty users find say reading aloud help dem memorise fastest.
• Once you ready to start hiding words, tap the blue Hide button once. E go hide the last word for each paragraph:

• You fit then read the text again, this time try remember the hidden words and fill the blank spaces from memory.
• Once you fit read the text without hesitating when you reach hidden words, you fit increase difficulty by hiding more words.
• If e too hard and you no fit remember some words, reduce the difficulty: tap Reveal button for the left, and e go show one hidden word for each paragraph.

Once all words don hide, the button to hide more words go disappear, and you go know your text by heart! E quick, abi?

I recommend make you read the text some times whenever you hide more words, until you fit read am smoothly without needing to think or hesitate.

Wetin dey next?

Just choose the next method to memorise and challenge your brain again, but another way. The methods dey arranged by difficulty, so you fit start from top and work your way down.

Tips and tricks

• You want test all the ways to memorise before you upgrade to Premium? Just restore the sample poem (with the button for Settings ), and all the methods go unlock for that text 💪

• If you want remember text forever, I recommend make you review am about 24 hours after you first learn am, then 10 days, 30 days, and 60 days later. After this last review, you suppose know your text by heart for long time.

• Small useful trick: if one hidden word hard to remember, you no need tap Reveal button plenty times. Just press the text itself hold, and all words go show for a moment. Release your finger, and the words go hide again.

• For plenty methods, each time you press the button to hide words, one word for each paragraph go hide, and line breaks separate the paragraphs. So if you get long text without line breaks, I suggest make you add line breaks to create more paragraphs, so more words go hide for each tap. You go learn faster and need fewer taps.

• If you want reset your text, you no need tap un-hide button plenty times: just press Reveal button hold and e go reset.

• Please back up your data regularly to iCloud Drive, Dropbox, etc. (e dey for the Settings menu).

• Even if you no get Premium, your texts still dey saved as part of your iCloud/iTunes backups. You fit update the app or restore your device from backup, and your texts go come back (but no delete the old version before you update). But if you delete the app or restore your device without your iCloud/iTunes backup, you fit need enter your texts again. So I recommend make you keep another copy somewhere else, like Notes app (or use the import/export options).

• If you get long text to learn, e fit help to divide am into smaller separate texts and learn one part at a time. I dey work on simple way to divide texts into sections; abeg email me if you want beta-test am!

• For languages wey use characters (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese,…): since white spaces no dey between characters for those languages, the app no fit find “words”. But I don create feature wey hide characters one by one! E no perfect, because sometimes e cut meaning for middle (since you fit need several characters to express one meaning), but users wey ask for the feature say e still be very good exercise.

  You no need do anything to enable that feature: the app go automatically detect say the text use characters, and activate characters setting for those texts.

  But remember to add some line breaks inside the text to create “paragraphs”, otherwise na only one character go hide for each tap, so you go need tap plenty times to hide enough characters.
