Keyboard Shortcuts for Accents and Marks

If you have a physical keyboard connected to your iPad, you can use the shortcut buttons that appear on the right side of the screen in Verb Dojo to enter letters with accents or marks. You can also learn the standard keyboard shortcuts below.

The big advantage of learning those shortcuts is that they work in all apps.

It may seem daunting at first, but if you are learning Spanish, you only need 3 shortcuts. If you are learning French, you need 5. I recommend writing them down on a sticky note and learning 1 a day. In less than a week, you are done.

Before You Start

1. When I ask you to press the option ⌥ key, it is the key with this symbol: ⌥ .
2. In Verb Dojo, you can ignore uppercase letters and always type lowercase. If you are writing in Spanish or French in another app and need an uppercase accented letter, press shift ⇧ when you enter the final letter. For example, to write É , press option ⌥ + E , release those keys, then press shift ⇧ + E .

If You Are Learning Spanish

You only have 3 shortcuts to learn.

1. To enter é , á , í , ú , or ó , first press option ⌥ + E , then release those keys. Then press the letter you need: E , A , I , U , or O .
2. To enter ü , first press option ⌥ + U , then release those keys. Then press U .
3. To enter ñ , first press option ⌥ + N , then release those keys. Then press N .

If You Are Learning French

You have 5 shortcuts to learn.

1. To enter é , first press option ⌥ + E , then release those keys. Then press E .
2. To enter è or à , first press option ⌥ + ` , then release those keys. Then press the letter you need: E or A .
3. To enter û or ô , first press option ⌥ + I , then release those keys. Then press the letter you need: U or O .
4. To enter ë , first press option ⌥ + U , then release those keys. Then press E .
5. To enter ç , press option ⌥ + C .
